Vocab Flashcards
Evaporation
When a liquid changes from a liquid phase to a gas phase; warm temperatures are needed
Condensation
When a gas changes from a gas phase to a liquid phase
Precipitation
Any kind of liquid or solid that falls from the air to the ground; hail, rain, sleet or snow
Freezing
When a liquid changes from a liquid to a solid phase
Thermal Energy
Energy due to the motion of atoms.
Relative Humidity
The actual amount of water vapor (gas) in the air compared to how much it can hold
Hail Stone
A small, hard pellet of ice that falls from the sky like rain
Atmosphere
The layer of gasses that surrounds Earth
Altitude of Elevation
The height of an object above sea level (0ft)
Energy
The ability of something to make a change in an environment (to do work)
Kinetic Energy
Energy of a moving object
Potential Energy
Stored energy; not changing an environment (doing work) yet
Conduction
Transfer of thermal energy between molecules that are touching
Transpiration
Water evaporating off of plants
Convection
Warmer, less dense material rising while cool, more dense material sinks
Radiation
Energy coming from the sun
Deposition
When a substance goes from gas to solid. Example: Frost
Clouds
Visible masses of water floating in the air
Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN)
The solid particle that water vapor attaches to when forming a cloud
Updraft
An upward movement of air
When a liquid changes from a liquid phase to a gas phase; warm temperatures are needed
