Vocab Flashcards
Metabolism
all the chemical processes going on continuously inside your body that allow life and normal functioning
Homeostasis
the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes
Photosynthesis
the process by which green plants and some other organisms transform light energy into chemical energy
Autotroph/producer
they create their own nutrients and energy
Heterotroph/consumer
organisms incapable of making their own food from light or inorganic compounds
Aerobic respiration
A chemical process in which oxygen is used to make energy from carbohydrates (sugars)
Anaerobic respiration
the oxidation of organic or inorganic substrates for ATP synthesis by oxidative phosphorylation using exogenously derived terminal (or alternate) electron acceptors other than oxygen
Prokaryotes
any organism that lacks a distinct nucleus and other organelles due to the absence of internal membranes
Eukaryotes
any cell or organism that possesses a clearly defined nucleus
Flagella(um)
organelles for bacterial locomotion
Cilia
a minute short hairlike process often forming part of a fringe
Population
a particular section, group, or type of people or animals living in an area or country
Species
a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding. The species is the principal natural taxonomic unit, ranking below a genus and denoted by a Latin binomial, e.g. Homo sapiens
Community
a group of people with a common characteristic or interest living together within a larger society
Ecosystem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment
Habitat
the natural home or environment of a plant, animal, or other organism
Benthic/benthos
anything associated with or occurring on the bottom of a body of water
Nekton
living organisms that are able to swim and move independently of currents
Salinity
the dissolved salt content of a body of water
Osmoconformers
organisms that keep their internal fluids isotonic to their environment
Osmoregulatory
organisms that actively regulate their osmotic pressure, independent of the surrounding environment
Ectotherm
an animal that is dependent on external sources of body heat
Endotherm
an animal that is dependent on or capable of the internal generation of heat; a warm-blooded animal
Asexual reproduction
generates offspring that are genetically identical to a single parent
