Plot
The sequence of events in a story that are connected by cause and effect
Imagery
Descriptive language to bring up a mental picture or sensation that appeals to the reader’s senses
Symbolism
Is when an author uses words, images, people, objects, or events to represent something other than their literal meaning
Setting
he time and place in which a story takes place. It includes the physical landscape, climate, weather, and the societal and cultural surroundings
Diction
Specific word choice by the author
Narrator
One who tells the story
Conflict
A struggle between two opposing forces, internally or externally.
Juxtaposition
Involves placing two or more contrasting elements side by side to highlight their differences and similarities. Writers use it to evoke emotions, and emphasize something
Theme
The central idea or unifying element of a story. It’s the larger issue that emerges as and it’s broader than a summary of the characters or events
Oxymoron
A figure of speech that combines contradictory words or phrases to create a new meaning
Tone
The mood implied by an author’s word choice and the way that the text can make a reader feel
Motif
A repeated element, such as an image, word, sound, or symbol, that appears throughout a story and has symbolic significance
Characterization
Describes and provides information about characters in a story. It helps readers understand how a character looks, acts, and what they do. Can also help readers understand a character’s motivations, desires, fears, loves, and dislikes
Figurative language
A way to convey meaning using words or phrases that are not literally true. Use of simile, metaphors, personification, etc.
Allusion
A brief, indirect reference to a person, place, event, or another work of literature
