vocab Flashcards
know all
Covalently bonded compounds with carbon compounds
Oragnic compounds
Large family of organic compounds, only carbon and hydrogen
Hydrocarbons
Same molecular formula, but different structure
Isomer
Formula in which shows the arrangement of atoms in the molecule of the compound
Structural formula
All single bonds, it is a saturated structure with hydrogen atoms
saturated hydrocarbons
At least 1 double or triple bond, contains fewer hydrogen atoms
Unsaturated hydrocarbons
All single bonds, nonpolar, unreactive, bioiling pointes increase as carbon cahin gets bigger
Alkanes
Alkanes in which the carbon atoms are arranged in a ring, nonpolar, smaller rings have smaller boiling points, strong carbon-carbon bond
Cycloalkanes
A functional group containing only carbon and hydrogen atoms
Alkyl group
A fossil fuel energy source (often alkanes)
Natural gas
Mixture of hydrocarbons and other organic compounds, creating a natural occurring flammable liquid
Pertoleum
Hydrocarbons with at least 1 double bond, unsaturated hydrocarbons (double bond), more reactive, boiling points increase as chain increase
Alkenes
Hydrocarbons with at least 1 triple bond, unsaturated hydrocarbons (triple bond), more reactive, much higher boiling points than alkene or alkane
Alkynes
Gives the carbon chain different properties
Functional group
Alcohol
R-OH
