Imperialism
● A policy of extending a civilization’s power and influence by taking over other civilizations with military force or diplomacy
Magistrates
● Government leaders, such as Consul, Censor, and Praetor, who carried out the laws and managed the day to day operations of the Roman Republic
● at first they could only be Patricians
Patricians
● Powerful, wealthy, landowning citizens who controlled government and society
● Only they could be Magistrates (government leaders)
Plebeians
● Common citizens, such as farmers, artisans, and shopkeepers
● Fought to gain more rights and power in the government during the Conflict of the Orders
● There were more Plebeians than Patricians
Praetor
● One of the magistrates
● A judge who interpreted and enforced the laws
Republic
● A form of government in which citizens choose their leaders by voting
Senate (Roman)
● 300 of the most elite Patricians who advised the consuls and proposed and debated laws
● they were appointed (by the Censor), not elected (oligarchy)
Tripartite
● A government with 3 parts
