Vocab Flashcards
Offense
The team with the possession of the ball
Down (try)
10 yards
1 play =
1 try = 1 down
Go for it
Attempt one last time
Punt
Give the ball to the other team
To punt the ball…
the ball is thrown back to the Punter and he will then kick the ball up into the air to the other team.
End zone
Where you score a touchdown
If the Offense IS able to move the ball 10 yards in their 4 tries
it is then a 1st Down! and they get to start all over again…4 more tries to move 10 yards
two ways that the Offense can ‘Lose’ the ball to the Defense.
1) The Quarterback throws the ball and the wrong team catches it. This is called and ‘Interception‘.
2) The Offense drops the ball on the ground and the other Defense picks it up.
Fumble
The Offense drops the ball on the ground and the other Defense picks it up.
A kick-off
happens at the beginning of the game, at the beginning of the 2nd half, and each time a team scores
Shotgun formation
is used by the Offense. Instead of lining up right behind the Center, the Quarterback will line up a few yards back. The Center will ‘Shoot’ the ball between his legs and to the Quarterback instead of just handing it through. This gives the Quarterback a few extra seconds to make a pass.
Number of players on each side
11 players
The offense has
Linemen
Quarterback
The QB lines up directly behind the Center and receives the football from him. He will either throw the ball to an offensive player, hand the ball off, or run with the ball himself
The offensive line
The big men on the team 300 lb+
Center
He’s the one you see in the center of the field with one hand on the ball. He’s the one that has the quarterbacks hands in between his thighs
Guard
The two guards are lined up on the right and left of the center. The guards have to protect the quarterback by blocking and create gaps for the running backs to run through
Tight end
The Tight End is a hybrid position that consists of blocking for the run plays (like an offensive linemen) and catching the ball (like a wide receiver).
Wide Receivers
Lets call these guys the pass catching specialists. They are the key players in most passing plays. These guys are tall, fast
Running Backs (RB)/Full Backs (FB
The key role of the running back is to receive the ball from the QB by either a handoff, toss, or pass in the back field. Depending on the formation of the offense, there will be either one or two running backs on the field.
Linebacker
They line up behind the defensive linemen and are usually considered the team’s best tacklers. Depending on the defensive formation there will be either three or four linebackers on each play
The Yellow line
The little yellow line indicates how far the team has to go to get a first down
