ACTION SHOT
Shows a subject or object in motion
BACKGROUND
Area farther away from photographer
CANDID
Unposed photo; great way to show emotion and relationships between two or more people
CATCHLIGHT
Reflection of light in a subject’s eye; adds depth
CENTER OF INTEREST
Point or feature that draws the eye’s attention
COMPLEMENTARY COLOR
Colors opposite each other on the color wheel; creates contrast in the image
CONTRAST
Difference between highlights and shadows in an image
DEPTH OF FIELD
Balance existing between in-focus and out-of-focus zones;
a small zone = shallow depth of field
a large zone = wide depth of field
EXPOSURE
Light “captured” in an image; changes in various light settings and controlled by camera
settings
FILLED FRAME
Subject fills entire frame of photo
FOCUS
How clearly a whole or parts of an image are defined
in-focus images are sharp and well-defined
out-of-focus images are blurry
FOREGROUND
Area closer to photographer
FRAMING
Compositional technique in which the center of interest is viewed through something else
the most effective frames are natural and slightly out-of-focus
can be objects or people
LEADING LINES
Lines within an image leading the eye to another point into or out of the image.
REPETITION
Lines or shapes reoccurring in a photo that create a pattern
