vocab Flashcards
Random samples
random select people to participate in research in a way everyone in the population as an equal chance of being included
replication
repeating the essence of a research study
experimental group
Group that is exposed to the independent variable, receives the experimental manipulation
naturalistic observation
Careful observations of animals or people in their natural/native environment, no attempts at intervention on the part of the researcher
statistical significance
correlation coefficient
The direction of the relationship between variable and its strength, helps us figure how closely two things vary together, and thus how well either one predicts the other
case study
An observation technique in which one individual or just a few individuals are carefully studied in-depth
survey
Self-report data, relies on the individual’s own report of their symptoms, behaviors, beliefs, or attitudes
correlation
measure of the strength and duration of the relationship between two factors.
placebo effect
Allows researchers to separate the effect of the variable itself from the expectations of the participants
population
All the cases in a group being studied, from which samples may be drawn
independant variable
The factor that the experimenter controls and manipulates
dependent variable
The variable that is being measured or tested in an experiment
hypothesis
a testable specific prediction that is arrived at logically from a theory
theory
predicts events in general terms
