What is Statistics?
Statistics deals with the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data in order to make decisions
What is descriptive statistics?
It consists of methods for organizing and summarizing data by using tables, graphs, and summary measures
What is inferential statistics?
Formal methods that use sample data to help make decisions or predictions about a population
What is a population?
A collection of persons, things, or objects whose characteristics are being studied
What is a sample?
A portion of the population selected for study
How do you know when it’s data from a population or sample?
They use these words?
Population: all, each
Sample: randomly selected
What is an element or member of a sample ?
A specific subject or object (EX: person, firm, state, or country) about which the info is collected
What is a parameter?
A numerical characteristic (number) of the whole population that can be estimated by a statistic.
What is a statistic?
A numerical measurement that represents a sample
What is a variable?
What are numerical variables?
they take on values with equal units such as weight in pounds and time in hours.
What are categorical variables?
They place the person or thing into a category
What is an observation or measurment?
The value of a variable for an element
What is data?
The actual values for the variable, they can be numbers or words
What is a data set?
a collection of observations on one or more variables
