Suburban
Inhabited residential districts located either on the outer rim of a city or outside the official limits of the city
CMA
Census Metropolitan Area. A city that has a minimum population of 100,000 of which 50,000 or more live in the core.
Sustainability
Improving the quality of human life while within the carrying capacity of supporting ecosystems
Liveability
All the characteristics of a community that contribute to improving the quality of life for the people who live there
Land Use
The various functions of land in an urban or rural area
Ecumene
A region well suited for people to live permanently with high population Canada’s ecumene is located within 600km of the US-Canada border where 95% of the population lives.
Sustainable City
A city that works so that all its citizens are able to meet their own needs without endangering the well-being of the natural world or the living conditions of other people, now or in the future

Growing Degree Days. A measure of how warm the growing season is in a given location

Areas with high concentrations of key natural heritage features, hydrological sensitive features and landforms
Natural Linkage Areas
Areas that act as central corridors connecting core areas and river valleys
Country Side Areas
Areas that provide an agricultural and rural transition and buffer between the Natural Core Areas and Urbanized Settlement Areas
Settlement Areas
Areas that reflect a range of existing communities planned by municipalities to reflect community needs and value
