Q
What is mass?
A
- how heavy something is, in grams (g)
- same everywhere
1
Q
What is matter?
A
- anything that has mass
- anything that takes up space
- NOT: heat, light, EM radiation
2
Q
What is weight?
A
- mass • gravitational force
- changes on where you are
3
Q
What are atoms?
A
- matter is made up of atoms
- atoms are made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons
- p has positive electric charge
- n has no electric charge
- e has negative electric charge
- different types of atoms = elements
- substances of only one type of atom cannot be broken down
- atomic number = # of p
- # of p = # of e
- atomic mass - atomic number =
# of neutrons
4
Q
What is density?
A
the comparison of how much matter there is in a certain amnt.
5
Q
How do you find density?
A
mass
d = ———
volume
6
Q
How do you know if an object will sink or float when it’s surrounded by water?
A
- if the object’s density is over 1g/mL, then it will sink
- if the object’s density is under 1g/mL, then it will float
7
Q
What is the Core-Accretion model & how does it suggest the Earth was formed?
A
- the Core-Accretion model is a theory of how the solar system was formed
- 13 BYA, there was just a cloud of gas, ice, dirt, and dust
- a nearby star exploded
- that explosion sent shock waves, or solar wind, towards the cloud
- because of the wind, the cloud started spinning and swirling
- the center got super hot & dense and our sun was formed
- the rest cooled and started going into clumps & solids
- those formed into the planets of our solar system
