muckraker who shocked the nation when he published The Jungle, a novel that revealed gruesome details about the meat packing industry in Chicago. The book was fiction but based on the things Sinclair had seen.

Robert La Folette
Governor of Wisconsin who promoted the principle of government by experts, advocated progressivism, and established a Legislative Reference Bureau to provide research, advice, and help in the drafting of legislation.
Platt Amendment
Platt Amendment a series of provisions that, in 1901, the United States insisted Cuba add to its new constitution, commanding Cuba to stay out of debt and giving the United States the right to intervene in the country and the right to buy or lease Cuban land for naval and fueling stations.
Emilio Aguinado
Leader of the Filipino independence movement against Spain (1895-1898). He proclaimed the independence of the Philippines in 1899, but his movement was crushed and he was captured by the United States Army in 1901.
Yellow journalism
Newspaper stories that are not necessarily true(gossip) to make the stories seem more appealing to the public. Used to increase paper circulation prior to the Spanish-American war by exaggerating misdeeds of Spain prior to the war.
Teller Amendment
proviso was passed after Congress essentially declared war on Spain for its actions in Cuba. This legislation declared to the world that the US had overthrown Spanish misrule and would give Cubans their freedom. The US honored it in 1902, and withdrew from Cuba.
Splendid little war
Nickname for Spanish American war coined by Hay, indicative of US attitude and cockiness// The Spanish-American War only lasted 100 days, cost the United States almost nothing in terms of casualties and brought the country significant gains in territory, turning the former set of colonies into an empire of her own and prompting Secretary of State John Hay to write to Theodore Roosevelt that the conflict was “a splendid little war, begun with the highest motives… favored by that Fortune which loves the brave.”

New Freedom
Democrat Woodrow Wilson’s political slogan in the presidential campaign of 1912; Wilson wanted to improve the banking system, lower tariffs (taxes), and, by breaking up monopolies, give small businesses freedom to compete.
Womans Suffrage
for women to recieve the right to vote; the movement developed from the fight against slavery. 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote

reform program which included a direct primary, increased taxes to create commissions, curbing excessive lobbying, backing reform labors, and conserving natural resources/////It gave women the right to vote. Before the suffrage movement, only men had a voice in deciding political, social and economic issues.
