Nation
A sizable group of people who believe themselves united by common bonds of race, language, custom, or religion.
State
A political community in a precise territory.
Sovereignty
A government makes and enforces its own laws without approval from any other authority.
Nation-State
The territories of both the nation and the state coincide.
Federalism
A system where power is divided and shared between the national government and state government.
Politics
The effort to control or influence the conduct of government.
Social contract
Theoretical agreement between the people and their government, where citizens give up some of their freedoms in exchange for the governments protection of their natural rights and maintenance of social order.
Oligarchy
A form of government where a small group of people hold power, essentially meaning “rule by a few”
Democracy
A system of government where the people hold power, either by ruling directly or through elected representatives; essentially, “rule by the people”
Republic
A form of government where the people hold power but elect representatives to exercise that power on their behalf.
Economics
The study of how societies produce, distribute, and consume goods and services.
Capitalism
A free market economic system where individuals have freedom of choice and are motivated by personal incentives, with competition among buyers and sellers playing a key role in setting prices.
Free market
An economic system in which prices are determined by unrestricted competition between privately owned businesses.
Bourgeoisie
Own the means of production and use their economic power to oppress the proletariat, or workers.
Proletariat
Workers/working class regarded as a group.
