Voc Flashcards
What is a wave?
A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another. A wave can be a single cycle or it can be a repeating pattern.
What is amplitude?
The maximum distance that the particles of a wave’s medium vibrate from their rest position.
What is wave length?
The distance from any point on a wave to the corresponding point on the next wave.
What is frequency?
The number of cycles, or vibrations, per unit of time; also the number of waves produced in a given amount of time.
What is wave speed?
The speed at which waves travel through a medium.
What is a sound wave?
A longitudinal wave caused by vibrations that travels through a medium.
Example: Sound from talking.
What is light?
A form of radiant electromagnetic energy that can be seen by the human eye.
What is transmission?
The passing of light or energy through matter.
What is absorption in optics?
The transfer of energy to particles of matter.
What is reflection?
The bouncing back of a ray of light, sound, or heat when it hits a surface that it does not pass through.
What is refraction?
The bending of a wave as it passes between two substances in which the speed of the wave differs.
What is a wave?
A wave is a disturbance that travels through a medium.
Example: Waves can travel through water or air.
What is a mechanical wave?
A mechanical wave is a wave that requires a medium through which to travel.
Example: Sound waves are mechanical waves.
What is a sound wave?
A sound wave is a longitudinal wave caused by vibrations in a material medium.
Example: Talking produces sound waves.
What is a light wave?
A light wave is a form of radiant electromagnetic energy that can travel through a vacuum.
