Vobcab 1 Flashcards
What is matter
Is anything that takes up space AND has mass.
What is mass
The amount of matter in an object.
What is Weight
Weight is an object’s mass multiplied by gravity.
What is Density
A measure of how closely packed an object’s molecules are
What is Volume
The amount of space an object takes up.
Electromagnetic
spectrum
The range of wavelengths or frequencies of electromagnetic radiation.
What is Visible light
Light that is visible and not harmful to the human eye
What is Radiation
Energy that travels through space at light speed.
What is Wavelength
Wavelength is the distance between two crests or troughs of a wave.
What is Frequency
Frequency is the number of waves passing a point per unit time.
What is the Doppler Effect
change in frequency due to motion.
What is Red Shift
Redshift occurs when an object moves away, and blueshift when it moves toward us.
What is the Law of
Conservation of
Matter and
Energy
Matter and energy are conserved in a closed system.
What is the HR Diagram
A graph shows the relationship between a star’s luminosity, temperature, color, and size.
What is Luminosity
Luminosity is a star’s brightness, based on its energy, not distance.
What is Fusion
In stars, hydrogen atoms fuse under high pressure and density to form helium.
What is Orbit
A smaller object orbits a larger one due to gravity.
What is revolution
The speed and time it takes for an object to orbit.
What is Rotation
Rotation is spinning on an axis; Earth completes one in 24 hours.
What is Eccentricity
The shape of an object’s orbit.
What is Habitable
“Goldilocks” Zone
the distance from a star where liquid water can exist.
