Main Idea
The most important idea(s) in a non-fiction piece.
Prefix
A syllable or group of words added to the beginning of a word, root, or stem which changes the meaning of the word.
Autobiography
A writer’s account of his or her own life, written from the first-person point of view.
Title
Name by which a specific thing is identified, known, or referred to, such as a book, painting, poem, song, etc. It may or may not indicate the topic of the text.
Thesaurus
A book that lists synonyms and antonyms.
Essay
A short written composition on a written subject.
Suffix
A syllable or group of words added to the end of a word, root, or stem which changes the meaning or form to a new word.
Nonfiction
Prose works, based on real situations, persons, or events
Pronoun
A word used a a a substitute for a noun phrase- meaning a person, place, or thing, without naming it.
Description
Statements that help us imagine someone or something, usually by appealing to our sense of sight .
Biography
The story of a person’s life written by someone else. It is told in third person.
Fiction
Prose works, such as novels and short stories, that tell about wholly or partly imaginary characters and events.
Novel
A prose story which is usually fairly long and has a detailed plot.
Narrator
Person who tells the story or relays events within the text.
Heading
Words or phrases used to break the text of an article into sections. They often signal change in the main points of the text.
