Aponeurosis
Fascia. a sheet of pearly white fibrous tissue that takes the place of a tendon in flat muscles having a wide area of attachment.
Superficial Cervical Fascia
Less treated (too thin to produce genuine restriction), associate with platysma, surrounds SCM and trapezius. Neurovascular supply, superficial veins, superficial lymph nodes, fat.
Cervical Fascia Terminology
Cervical Fascia
Retropharyngeal Space
Danger Space
Prevertebral Fascia (Deep Cervical)
-from basilar apophysis of the occiput and stretches over anterior longitudinal ligament and extends laterally to anterior tubercles of transverse process of cervical spine
-after thoracic spine insertion, continues down as posterior endothoracic fascia
-scalene tubercle connection means some fibers reinforce subclavius fascia and some mix with suspending ligaments of the pleural dome.
Nerves of Deep Cervical Fascia
Deep Investing Fascia/Superficial layer of deep cervical fascia
Deep Investing Fascia/Superficial layer of deep cervical fascia
Pretracheal Fascia / mid cervical fascia
-from bottom of thyroid gland to middle cervical fascia, prevertebral fascia, and vascular sheath which encloses carotid artery, jugular vein and vagus nerve
Pretracheal Fascia / mid cervical fascia and buccopharyngeal fascia
Carotid Sheath
Middle Cervical Fascia
Can be described as middle layer of deep cervical fascia or as a subset of either the investing fascia or Pretracheal fascia. Superior attachment to hyoid bone, inferior to all bony attachments of thoracic inlet : WB 15. Continuous with subclavian fascia and then clavipectoral, from posterior manubrium, extends to superior sternopericardic ligament, often affected by whiplash
Subclavian Fascia
Attaches to clavicle and surrounds subclavius muscle
Continuous with middle cervical fascia and clavipectoral fascia
Clavipectoral Fascia
Joins cervical spine and thorax to arm
Boundaries are clavicle, coracoid process, axilla
Inserts in subclavian fascia
Linked with brachial fascia at coracobrachialis and short head of biceps brachii
When treating middle cervical F, check CPF for adhesions or fibrosis
