Vitamins and Fcns Flashcards
4 fat soluble vitamins
D, A,K,E
Vitamin A (______)
Retinol
Retinol
Vitamin A;
Fcn: maintain epithelial cells, proper vision
What is the best source of Vitamin D
Sunlight (90%)
Vitamin D Fcns
- bone metabolism (promotes Ca2+ absorption)
- muscle fcn
- health & dvlpmt of skin
Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency
- increased loss in Ca2+ from bones
- compromised Ca2+ absorption
- muscle weakness (impaired Ca2+ metabolism)
- Ricket’s disease (stunted bone growth)
Vitamin E Fcns
anti oxidant in cell membrane
can prevent oxidation of LDLs
Vitamin E supplementation
- could benefit in situations of RBC free radical damage
- individuals in high altitude/smog environments may benefit
- NOT encouraged in most individuals
Vitamin K Fcns
- blood coagulation
- enhances fcn of osteocalcin (protein strengthening protein)
What are the 9 water soluble vitamins
- B1 (Thiamin)
- B2 (Riboflavin)
- B3 (Niacin)
- B6
- B12
- Folic Acid
- Pantothenic Acid
- Biotin
- Vitamin C
Vitamin B1 Fcns
- essential for normal nervous syst fcns
- co-enzyme to convert pyruvate to Acetyl Co-A
Thiamin
B1
Riboflavin
B2
Vitamin B2 Fcns
Energy production from CHO/fat
Niacin
B3
How is B3 formed
formed from excess tryptophan (food high in PRO)
Vitamin B3 Fcns
- Component of NAD+
- co-enzyme in glycolysis and Krebs cycle
- Fat metabolism
Niacin Suppplementation
- can decrease numbers of LDLs and triglycerides
- long term supp –> hepatitis and ulcers
- NOT needed in well balanced diet
Vitamin B6 Fcns
- Co-enzyme for 60+ enzymes (imp. for glycogenolysis and GNG)
- metabolism of CHO/fats
Sources of Vitamin B12
-only found in animal foods
Vitamin B12 Fcns
Coenzyme for:
- DNA synthesis
- Synthesis for myelin sheath
- Synthesis for RBCs
Populations that would benefit from Vitamin B12 supplementation
- wt. controlled sports (wrestling/gymnastics)
- vegetarians
Folic Acid Fcns
Production and maintenance of:
- new cells
- DNA/RNA synthesis
- RBCs
- Important to prevent neural tube defects during pregnancy
- metabolizing certain amino acids
Populations that would benefit from Folic Acid supplementation
EVERYBODY needs to increase folic acid intake
Pantothenic Acid
- Found in all foods
- No supp needed
Biotin Fcns (source)
- Imp coenzyme for GNG
- DNA/RNA synthesis
Synthesized by natural bacteria found in intestine
Choline* Fcns
- Not technically a vitamin*
1. cell membrane
2. neurotransmitters
Ascorbic Acid
Vitamin C
Vitamin C Fcns
- Assist in formation of:
1. collagen
2. epithelium
3. RBCs - 2x-4x increase in iron absorption in SI
- Powerful anti oxidant
- forms some neurotransmitters/hormones
Populations that would benefit from Vitamin C supplementation
- increased immune syst fcn
- Imp for high training volume athletes
- NO MEGADOSING (>1000mg); destroys B12
