Thiamine, Beri-beri. Also Wernicke’s in alcoholics.
B2 - what is it called, what does a deficiency cause?
Riboflavin, angular stomatitis
B5 - what is it called?
pantothenic acid
B3 - what is it called, and what condition does a deficiency cause?
Niacin, Pellagra
B7 - what is it called, and what can cause a deficiency?
Biotin, and eating too much raw egg can cause a B7 defiiciency
B6 - what is it called, and what condition does a deficiency cause?
Pyrodixal phosphate, not enough makes you irritable, confused, depressed with inflamed mouth and tongue
B9 - what is it called, and what condition does a deficiency cause?
Folic acid, Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) in foetus, anaemia in adults
B12 - what is it called, and what condition does a deficiency cause?
Cobalamin, anaemia, neurological damage, pernicious anaemia (common in vegans)
C - what is it called, and what condition does a deficiency cause?
Ascorbic acid, scurvy
What are NMESs?
Non-milk extrinsic sugars - i.e. added sugar - eat less than 11% in diet
Fibre - what is it good for, and what does a lack cause?
removes cholesterol, constipation
What are the EFAs?
Essential Fatty Acids - linoleic acid - omegas 3 and 6 - needed for prostaglandin and thromboxane synthesis
Which essential amino acids do many plants lack (except soya and quinoa)
Cystine, methionine and tryptophan (cys-met-trp)
What are the fat soluble vitamins?
D-A-K-E
What does a lack of Vit A cause?
