Q

Why do we need them?

A

Because they increase the surface that the hydrophilic lipases can work on. Remember that lipids are hydrophobic molecules and that stabilizes them in a hydrophilic environment such as the lumen of the gut!

Q

Ok, we broke them down to monoglycerides (FFAs). How are they absorbed?

16
Q

What does it do in children?

A

Epipyses do not fuse and bones deform.

17
Q

In adults?

A

Same mechanism (reduced mineralization), leads to osteomalacia->no deformity, but pain and muscle weakness due to abnormal burden redistribution.

18
Q

What vitamin is mainly produced in the gut?

A

VitK (gut bacteria)

19
Q

What 2 vitamin deficiencies have complementary effects on bones?

A

Vit D (impaired mineralization) and vitC (impaired collagen synthesis)

20
Q

Alopecia from micronutrient deficiency?

A

B5 (rare), zinc(more common, esp. after bariatric surgery), vit A chronic toxicity
