Q

Where is vitamin A obtained?

A

VITAMIN A IS OBTAINED FROM ANIMAL FOODS IN THE
FORM OF RETINYL PALMITATE, WHICH IS CONVERTED INTO
RETINOL IN THE ILEUM (SMALL INTESTINE). RETINOL IS THE
FORM OF VITAMIN A WHICH IS STORED MAINLY IN THE
LIVER AND KIDNEYS.

Q

What are the functions of vitamin A?

A

RETINOL IS CONVERTED IN THE BODY INTO RETINAL, WHICH IS NEEDED BY THE RETINA IN THE EYES. RETINAL JOINS UP WITH A PROTEIN CALLED OPSIN TO FORM A LIGHT SENSITIVE SUBSTANCE CALLED RHODOPSIN (KNOWN AS PURPLE VISION) WHICH ENABLES PEOPLE TO SEE IN DIM LIGHT.
RETINOL IS ALSO IMPORTANT FOR CELL GROWTH IN BLOOD VESSELS AND IS ALSO FOUND IN GLANDS AND ORGANS THROUGHOUT THE BODY.
VITAMIN A IS ALSO INVOLVED IN THE CORRECT WORKING OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AND KEEPING MUCOUS MEMBRANES THROUGHOUT THE BODY HEALTHY, ALL OF WHICH HELPS TO PREVENT THE DEVELOPMENT OF INFECTIONS. IT IS ALSO AN ANTI OXIDANT.

Q

What are the forms of Vitamin D?

A

THERE ARE SEVERAL FORMS OF VITAMIN D, ALL OF WHICH ARE STEROLS.
THE FORM OF VITAMIN D FROM FOOD THAT THE BODY USES IS VITAMIN D3, CALLED CHOLECALCIFEROL. IT IS FOUND IN LIVER AND LIVER OILS EG. COD LIVER AND IN DAIRY PRODUCTS.
VITAMIN D2 (ERGOCALCIFEROL) IS A SYNTHETIC FORM OF VITAMIN D WHICH IS USED IN SUPPLEMENTS.

16
Q

What are the forms of Vitamin E?

A

THERE ARE VARIOUS FORMS OF TOCOPHEROL, BUT THE MAIN ONE THAT IS USED BY THE BODY IS ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL.
THIS VITAMIN HAS A POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANT EFFECT IN THE BODY, WHICH MEANS THAT IT PREVENTS SUBSTANCES CALLED FREE RADICALS THAT ARE EITHER TAKEN INTO THE BODY (EG. FROM AIR, WATER ETC) OR PRODUCED BY IT, FROM PICKING UP OXYGEN AND GOING ON TO DAMAGE BODY CELLS AND STOP THEM WORKING PROPERLY.

17
Q

What are the functions of vitamin E?

A

MAINTAIN HEALTHY SKIN AND EYES
STRENGTHEN THE BODY’S NATURAL DEFENCE AGAINST ILLNESS AND INFECTION (THE IMMUNE SYSTEM)
ANTIOXIDANT

18
Q

what are some sources of vitamin e?

A

SOYA
CORN OIL
OLIVE OIL
NUTS
SEEDS
WHOLE WHEAT
VEGETABLE FAT SPREADS

19
Q

What is vitamin K chemical name?

A

PHYLLOQUINONE

20
Q

What are the functions of vitamin K?

A

BLOOD CLOTTING
BONE METABOLISM
REGULATING BLOOD CALCIUM LEVELS
THE BODY NEEDS VITAMIN K TO PRODUCE PROTHROMBIN, A PROTEIN AND CLOTTING FACTOR THAT IS IMPORTANT IN BLOOD CLOTTING AND BONE METABOLISM
