Vitamins Flashcards
What are macronutrients and micronutrients?
Macronutrients are nutrients that your body needs in large amounts in order to function (e.g. proteins, fats and carbs)
Micronutrients are essential but in lower doses (e.g. vitamins and other minerals)
What are the properties of vitamins?
They are either fat soluble or water soluble
Most vitamins are essential as humans cannot synthesise them (with the exception of vitamin D and biotin)
What are the properties of vitamins?

Synthetisation of biotin and vitamin D
Biotin is synthesised in the intestines
Vitamin D is synthesised in the skin after being exposed to UV radiation
Properties of fat soluble molecules
Have long hydrocarbon chain carboxylic acids
Insoluble due to their long hydrocarbon chain
Hence, it is largely non polar
Can either be saturated or unsaturated (monounsaturated or polyunsaturated)
Properties of water soluble molecules
