Thiamin deficiency
Vit B1
chronic alcohol dependent pt where little food consumed / in starvation of any cause
presentation of thiamin deficiency
wernicke-korsakoff syndrome
polyneuropathy
cardiac failure
rx thiamin deficiency
thiamin for 3d im or iv
thiamin always given before?
iv glucose
pyridoxine deficiency
vitamin E6
sensory neuropathy
precipitated in isoniazid therapy for TB
prophylactic pyridoxine is given with it
vitamin B12 deficiency
causes polyneuropathy and the syndrome of subacute combined degeneration of the cord
= distal sensory loss, absent ankle jerk, exaggerated knee jerk reflexes
rx vit B12
intramuscular vitamin B12 which reverses the peripheral nerve damage but has little effect on the CNS (cord and brain signs)
