Vital Signs Flashcards
Homeostasis
A state of balance in the human body
4 cardinal vital signs
Temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure
Temperature
Regulated by a balance of heat produced and heat lost
3 ways heat is produced
Muscles, glands, oxidation of food
3 ways heat is lost
Perspiration, respiration, excretion
How is temperature controlled?
Regulated by the hypothalamus, which receives input from thermoreceptors
Normal body temp range
97-99
Febrile
Elevated temp
Pyrexia
Above-normal temp
Hyperthermia
Uncontrolled high temp
Hypothermia
Below normal temp
What does a fever mean?
The body is activating the immune system and making the temperature too high for microbes to be able to reproduce
Pulse
How well blood is circulating, pressure of the blood against the artery wall
Tachycardia
Pulse rate over 100 bpm
Bradycardia
Pulse rate under 60 bpm
Rhythm
Regularity of the heart
Arrhythmia
An irregular pulse rate
Volume
Strength/pressure of a beat
Bounding
Strong pulse
Threading
Weak pulse
8 Common Pulse Sites
Temporal, carotid, apical, brachial, radial, femoral, posterior tibial, dorsalis pedis
Respiration
Process of taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide
Normal respiration rate
12-20 per minute
Dyspnea
Shortness of breath
