Vital Signs Flashcards
What is the function of vital signs?
Vital signs tell you the extent to which a person is alive.
What are factors that will affect vital signs?
ILLNESS
EMOTIONS – ANGER, FEAR, ANXIETY, PAIN
EXERCISE AND ACTIVITY
AGE AND GENDER
ENVIRONMENT - WEATHER
FOOD AND FLUID INTAKE
MEDICATIONS
TIME OF DAY – ↓ AM, ↑ PM
NOISE
What is the normal body Urine output?
0.5ml/kg/hr or More than 30 ml/hy
What is the normal partial pressure PaO2?
Greater than 70 mmHg
What is the normal of blood pH?
7.35 – 7.45
How can one determine that oxygen is reaching the cells?
Respiration, Pulse, Perfusion, Colour,O2 Sat, Blood Pressure
How can one determine the Water/Hydration/Fluid Balance are operating optimally ?
Condition of skin and mucous membranes, oedema, urine output
True or False? A pulse is felt every time the heart beats
TRUE!!
True or False? Pulse rate is higher in some areas than others.
FALSE!! The pulse should be the same in all pulse sites on the body
How can the level of consciousness be determined by?
AVPU scale & Glasgow Coma Scale
How can orientation of an individual be determined?
Time, Place, Person , Event - (TPPE scale)
How can one determine the function of pupils ?
Bilateral Symmetry, & Reaction to Light (direct and consensual)
What is the normal respiration rate?
12-20 bpm
True or False? Women normally have a higher bp than men.
FALSE!! Women have a LOWER bp than men.
True or False?– BLOOD PRESSURE IS LOWER WHEN LYING DOWN
TRUE!!
Fill in the blank. “ The bp of a person _______ as they get older”
Increases
True or False? – BLACK PERSONS GENERALLY HAVE HIGHER BLOOD PRESSURE THAN WHITE PERSONS DO.
TRUE!!
“ we eat nuff junk”
What are guidelines to taking blood pressure of a person?
1.Cuff should be placed over Bare arm
2. Cuff should not be placed on the arm with a iv, cast or dialysis shunt
3.Cuff should not be placed over clothing
4. Cuff should not be placed on the side that breast surgery was done.
5.Blood pressure should be taken with a person sitting or lying down.
How is Pulse pressure calculated?
Systolic pressure- Diastolic pressure
How is mean arterial pressure calculated?
Diastolic + 1/3 Pulse Pressure
What is normal inter-cranial pressure?
10-15 mmHg
What is the normal Cerebral Perfusion Pressure (CPP)?
should not be less than 65 mmHg
How is CPP calculated ?
CPP= MAP- ICP
How is heat produced in the body?
- Through muscle contraction
- Through the breakdown of food during digestion
- Through environmental factors
What scale is used to determine pupil function?
Pupils should be -Equal, Round, Regular, Reactive to light.
