- Deficient renal 1-α hydroxylation necessitates the use of active vitamin D metabolites, such as 1α hydroxycholecalciferol or
1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol. Specialist medical advice should be sought in such cases.

Treatment of vit D in deficient patients
A
- 4–6 weeks, either with cholecalciferol 20 000 iu a week or ergocalciferol 10 000 iu twice a week, followed by standard supplementation
- Short-term repletion, 20 000 iu weekly
