Visual + written sources Flashcards
What does the Catullus Poems source talk about (betrothal)
It addresses young women, telling them that they should not fight against their husband - ‘It is not right to fight against their man whom your father himself gave you to’ - tells them that their virginity is not completely theirs - and that they should obey their parents
This shows just how little say many women had in marriage, and how the men held much of the power
Source 4: What does the source by Quintilian (elements of oratory) say?
Many women were married to much older men—
‘She was so young when death took her’
‘For she had every virtue that is given to a woman to possess’
‘Her death was like the loss not merely of a wife, but of a daughter’
‘Her death alone was such a blow that thereafter no good fortune could bring me true happiness’
What does the source 1 image show (iunctio dextrarum)
It shows a Roman couple joining hands; the bride’s belt may show the knot symbolising that her husband was ‘belted and bound’ to her. A very solemn part of the wedding.
