Allusions
reference to other media to change the meaning of the original media
Angles/lines
horizontal, vertical, diagonal
the direction of lines in the media.
horizontal = calm
vertical = structure
diagonals = unease, off balance
body language
facial expressions, gestures etc to show a persons emotions
colour
used to evoke different emotions from the viewer.
purple = royalty
blue = sad
red = angry, lust
composition
the image as a whole- where things are placed, colour, lighting, framing
contrast
placing opposite things next to each other to create interest and complexity
eg, black and white next to each other
gaze
where the gaze of a character is to direct the viewers eyes
high angle shot
taken from above to give a sense of intimidation, weakness, helpless.
lighting
how a shot is lit. impacts mood and atmosphere of an image
low light= secretive, seedy
harsh light= unnerving
soft light= intimate
salience
where the viewers eyes are first drawn.
created through colour, contrast, framing and layout
text
words used to convey a message.
