Visual System 2 Flashcards
what are the efferent nerves?
efferent nerves go away from the brain, supply nerve impulses to extraocular muscles
what are efferent nerves also called?
also called motor nerves (from CNS to muscle)
lateral inhibition??
the receptive field of ganglion cells indicates how the information form all the receptors is condensed, indicated what info is being sent from the eye to the brain
what structure does the Oculomotor nerve (CN 3) supply impulses to??
-Levator palpebrae superioris
-The recti (superior, medial & inferior)
-The inferior oblique
What do each of the recti do??(SMI)
Superior-> elevates the eye
Medial-> moves the eye towards the nose
Inferior-> moves eye down
what does the Trochlear nerve (CN 4) supply to ??
supplies to the superior oblique
what is the function of the superior oblique??
helps the eye move downwards and inwards (important for reading)
what does the abducent nerve (CN 6) supply to??
the lateral rectus muscle
what is the function of the lateral rectus muscle??
helps the eye move out (abducts the eye)
what do the afferent nerves do??
transports impulses from the eye and adnexa (supporting structures around the eye) to the brain
where does the optic nerve travel to??
the optic nerve goes from the back of the eye (retina) to the brain
whta is the optic nerve made of??
ganglion cells
What is the Trigeminal nerve responsible for??
sensations of the face and motor functions like biting and chewing
what does the trigeminal nerve divide into??
ophthalmic nerve
maxillary nerve and the
mandibular nerve
Sensory nerve fibres from the eye and adnexa travel to the brain in which nerve?
trigeminal nerve (CN V)
