Visual Recognition Flashcards
What is the word superiority effect?
Where we can see a letter better when there are other letters to analyse at the same time
What are homophones?
Words that although are differently spelt, have the same pronunciation
What is a lexicon?
A lexicon is our word storage system in our brains and each word is said to be a lexical entry
What are the two routes used for word recognition?
The visual route - where the whole word is recognised
The phonological route - where letters are mapped to sounds - they read phonetically
What is the lexical decision task?
Where an individual is asked whether letters presented to them spell a word - decision must be made quickly
What is a pseudohomophone?
A homophone which is a non-word such as hoap as oppose to hope
What is surface dyslexia?
Surface dyslexia means a sufferer can successfully use spelling-to- sound rules to convert letters to sounds, as long as a word is regular; if it disobeys the rules the wrong pronunciation results.
What is phonological dyslexia?
Where an individual is unable to use a phonological route but the visual recognition is intact
