Visual Perception (Chapter 2) Flashcards
Sensation vs Perception
Sensation: info received by eye (light, shape, contour) vs Perception: processing of info by brain
Visual Habituation
infants become used to stimulus until they look away, meaning they no longer have interest
Preferential looking
Could use to find if infants can discriminate between 2 stimuli. Infant is habituated to stimulus then show new one if child looks longer at second stimulus it’s inferred they can discriminate between the two
Visual acuity.
Clarity of focus within retina.
Visual Cortical Regions, V1 & V2, Ventral Stream & Dorsal Stream
V1- Visual Cortex, V2- Prestriate cortex, Ventral Stream (V2 &V4), Dorsal Stream (V3, V5, & DM
Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (LGN)
Part of the thalamus, part of brain that relays info from retina to brain.
Focus
Dependent on fovea in retina (develops at 2-3m)
Visual orientation.
Ability to move head and eyes in anticipation of stimulus.
Electroencephalography
Electrical components of cells and tissues and changes in voltage to assess activity.
saccades
Rapid movement of the eye typically used for reading
Binocular parallax
Objects appear in different locations when viewed separately with one eye from the same position, depth perception
Stereopsis
Two separate images from each of the two eyes are combined to make one image
Ocular dominance columns
Process distinctive inputs from each eye and are sensitive to different information each eye receives
Motion parallax
Depth Q where objects that are closer to us appear to move further across our field of view than distant objects
ventral and dorsal pathways
v- primary visual cortex to temporal lobe (what an object is), d- primary cortex to parietal cortex (where an object is)
Superior Temporal Sulcus & Fusiform Gyrus
process faces, STS used in gazing, Fusiform Face Area (FFA) in gyrus
N170
Negative electrical signal measured in occipital and temporal region of scalp in response to human faces
Parahippocampal
Part of brain’s limbic system involved in memories and recalling visual scenes
