Painting
form of visual art that captures the expression of ideas and emotions on a two-dimensional surface
Collage
a piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric onto a backing.
Ceramic
made of clay and permanently hardened by heat
Sitter
The person posing in a portrait
portrait
a pictorial representation of a person usually showing the face
Posturise
to print or display (an image, such as a photograph) with a limited number of tones or colours
Tone
the lightness or darkness of colours used
Composition
a complete work of art
Audience
group of people who view a work of art
Influence
the capacity to have an effect on something. inspired by the works of something
Technique
technical skill, an ability to apply procedures or methods so as to effect a desired result
Realism
the accurate, detailed, unembellished depiction of nature or of contemporary life
Abstract
art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead uses shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect
Grid
a framework of spaced bars that are parallel to or cross each other
Pattern
any regularly repeated arrangement
Warm
Hues that give the feeling of warmth, such as red, orange, and yellow
Cool
Hues that give the feeling of coolness, such as blue, green, and purple
Contrasting
Contrasting colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel
Harmonious
Harmonious colours sit beside each other on the colour wheel
Monochromatic
Monochrome means one colour, so in relation to art, a monochrome artwork is one that includes only one colour
Dominant
the part of a design that is the most important, powerful or has the most influence
Bisque
clay which has been fired once
Leather hard
dried and hardened enough to be decorated or trimmed with slip but not enough to be fired.
Glaze
thin layer of liquid which is put on a piece of pottery and becomes hard/shiny
