Visual and Auditory Perception Flashcards
What does the ventral stream do?
The ventral stream, often referred to as the “what pathway,” is primarily responsible for object recognition and the conscious perception of visual stimuli.
What does the dorsal stream do?
The dorsal stream, often termed the “where pathway” or “how pathway,” is primarily concerned with spatial perception and the guidance of actions in response to visual stimuli.
Is the ventral stream allocentric or egocentric and what does this mean?
Allocentric; meaning it is object-centred and is independent of observers perception.
Is the dorsal stream allocentric or egocentric and what does this mean?
Egocentric; meaning it is body-centred and dependant on the observers perception.
Where is the ventral stream?
Runs from the primary visual cortex to the temporal cortex
Where is the dorsal stream?
Runs from the primary visual cortex to the parietal cortex.
What is blindsight?
Blindsight is an ability of those who are blind to respond to visual stimuli that they cannot consciously see.
What is subliminal perception?
Subliminal perception refers to the processing of information by the brain that occurs below the threshold of conscious awareness.
What are the2 main thresholds of subliminal perception
the subjective threshold and the objective threshold
What is the subjective threshold
The subjective threshold is defined by an individual failure to report conscious awareness of a stimuli.
What is the objective threshold
The objective threshold is defined by an individuals inability to make accurate forced-choice decisions about a stimulus.
What is visual perception?
Visual perception is a complex cognitive process that allows individuals to interpret and make sense of the visual information that bombards their eyes every moment
What was James Gibsons theory of direct perception?
direct perception is the activity of getting information from the ambient array of light
What are affordances?
Directly perceivable (already in the environment) potential uses of objects
