IT’S COLD! I’d like to welcome you all to December. For us Chicagoans this month marks the start of a long season of cold, wet, and generally shitty gray weather. We all have ways to help soften winter’s sharp edges. Some of us lay on bear skin rugs in front of our fireplace, some of us drink hot whiskey drinks, and some try speed spring’s coming by sleeping off sharp whiskey hangovers. Those are all great, but there is no better way to deal with winter than to keep Jack Frost from nipping at your nose, fingers, toes, and pretty much everything else.

Today I’d like to talk to you about how to properly dress for winter’s harsh conditions.
Like many of you, I’ve spent all of my years dealing with winter weather here in the Midwest.
My years spent working outside in all weather conditions as a bicycle messenger here in Chicago taught me a lot about how dressing properly can make all the difference in the world, especially in the winter.

According to science daily.com, “It takes only minutes for exposed skin to become frostbitten if the temperature falls below 20 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind is blowing at 20 miles per hour or more, your hands, fingers, feet, toes, and ears are especially susceptible, so you need to take special care protecting them.”

A warm pair of gloves and a good hat are essentials, a properly insulated coat is needed to maintain your core temperature, appropriate footwear is a must, and an insulating base layer is underrated.

[Let’s start to peel off some of these layers, shall we?]

Q

A warm pair of gloves and a good hat are essential.
I’ll start with my gloves.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “When it’s cold, blood flow is concentrated on your body’s core, leaving your hands and feet vulnerable to frostbite. Don the mittens or gloves before your hands become cold and then remove them if your hands begin to sweat.”These are warm and moisture resistant. They aren’t too bulky and don’t restrict my manual dexterity. Remember you’re going to need to use your keys and use zippers.

Your mother probably always reminded you to put on your hat, that was good advice. This hat, like the gloves is warm and water resistant. It has flaps to cover my ears.

[ Next, let’s have a look at the most obvious piece of the puzzle]

II. A properly insulated coat is needed to maintain your core temperature.
A. The outer Shell should be water resistant.
B. The inside should have enough insulation to keep your bodes warmth from escaping.

[You’re feet are in direct contact with all of winters nasty precipitation.]

Q

It’s really important to keep your feet warm and dry.Your boots should keep the water out.

According to osha.gov “Trench Foot or immersion foot is caused by having feet immersed in cold water at temperatures above freezing for long periods of time. It is similar to frostbite, but considered less severe. Symptoms usually consist of tingling, itching or burning sensation. Blisters may be present.”

These boots are mostly rubber and as a result waterproof up to about 3”. Your boots should be large enough that you can wear thick, warm socks.

[Feast your eyes!]

Q

An insulating base layer is underrated. I bet there isn’t a single person in here that owns one of these babies! My “union suit” covers me in an extra layer of invisible warmth from my neck all the way down to my ankles. Wear one of these and you’ll never again feel that cold breeze up your back when you bend over.

[These things are all cold weather essentials.]

It’s winter for Chirst’s sake, not a fashion show. Wear a hat, wear a pair of gloves, put on a giant coat, and wear those dorky looking boots your grandma gave you for christmas last year. Don’t be one of those assholes wearing nothing but a t-shirt when it’s snowing, you know what I’m talking about.
