vision problems Flashcards
emmetropia
the normal eye; no refractive error
accommodation
the process of using muscles to change the shape of the lens to focus
presbyopia
old eyes, the lens is hardened so little accommodation, near point increases
hyperopia
farsightedness
myopia
nearsightedness
lateral inhibition
a process that enhances out ability to detect boarders(increases contrast); neighboring cells can inhibit each other via horizontal cells
dark adaption
cones adapt really quick, but little improvement whereas rods adapt slowly but show a lot if improvement in vision
macular degeneration
cells dying on the fovea; wherever you’re focused, you see a scotoma (blind/blurry spot)
retinitis pigmentosa
cells at the bottom of the retina start to die, lose peripheral vision
Usher’s Syndrome
when a person is born deaf and develops retinitis pigmentosa. person doing sign language has to be far away
diabetic retinopathy
blood vessels leak and pop bc the blood is too thick, causes scotoma
hypertensive retinopathy
high blood pressure causing blood vessels in the eye to pop and leak
glaucoma
detached retina
detached retina
caused by a fall or hit to the head jarring the retina, causes the leaking of vitreous humor
