Viruses Vocab Flashcards
a nonliving, microscopic particle that replicates inside a cell
virus
a virus that copies itself inside a cell
replication
replication process of a virus
lytic cycle
rupture the cell membrane + release virus
lysis
proteins on the outside of a virus
spike proteins
organism that a virus uses for resources
host
organism that transmits disease
vector
Identify the steps of the lytic cycle
- A: attach
- I: inject info
- R: replicate
- R: release / lysis
Why do we get vaccines?
to prevent from viruses
What are vaccines made from?
- made from a disabled version of the virus
Where is injected?
-Into ur system
Does ur body fight it off naturally?
Yes, it naturally giving you immunity
How long does the vaccine take to become immune?
About 2 weeks
Virus shapes: round
Spherical
Virus shapes: Bacteriophage
Complex
Virus shapes: many sides
polyhedral
Virus shapes: cylinder
helical
Is a virus a living thing?
No because it doesn’t follow the 5 characteristics of life. They aren’t made of cells, they don’t grow and mature and they don’t reproduce. They might respond to their environment and they might use energy but we’re not totally sure.
What is the size of a virus in relation to a cell or bacteria?
A cell is the biggest, the bacteria is slightly smaller and the virus is the smallest.
