Q

Capsid

A

Holds viral genome (nucleic acid) inside.

  • The basic unit of virion structure (simplest it can get).

Q

Characteristics of Enveloped Viruses

A
  • Envelope from host cell phospholipid membranes (golgi or plama).
  • Contains virally encoded structural proteins called glycoproteins or host cell proteins.
  • Sensitive to heat, acids, drying
  • Less associated with GI diseases (stomach acid will melt them)

Q

Characteristics of Non-Enveloped (Naked) Viruses

A
  • Outer covering is capsid protein.
  • Often lysis the host cell
  • Resistant to heat, acids, drying
  • Associated with GI tract

A

Pure protein and has NO genome

  • Switch from normal (a-helix) to pathogenic (b-sheet) conformation.
  • Usually located in diseased brain tissue
  • causes spongy appearance brain and dementia
