Viruses
A program code or software which can replicate itself with the intention of deleting and corrupting files on the computer. Viruses are sent through emails, and reside on infected software and websites.
Effect of viruses
- viruses can cause the computer to crash or stop functioning normally.
- software can delete files on the computer
- the software can corrupt the operating system files making it run slower.
Solutions of viruses
- Install anti-virus software
- Don’t use software from unknown sources
- Be careful when opening emails or attachments from unknown senders.
Worms
Unlike viruses worms don’t require an active host, they remain inside applications which allow them to move throughout networks. It is a stand alone virus which can self replicate. Worms main intention is to corrupt the entire network, they rely on security failures in the network. This allowing them to spread unhindered.
Trojan Horse
Is often a malicious software which is disguised as some legitimate software, which often contains malicious instructions embedded inside. The main motive of the trojan horse is to carry out harm to the user’s computer. Often arrives as an attachment or downloaded from an infected website.
Once installed cybercriminals will gain access to the personal data on the device. More spyware will then be installed.
Key Logging
a form of spyware which gathers information by monitoring the user’s keyboards activities, it is stored on a small file which is then emailed to the cybercriminal responsible for the act. Often used to capture personal data.
Adware
floods the users with unwanted ads, it could redirect the user to a fake website if accidently clicked on.
Ransomware
are programs which encrypt the data, this is holding the data hostage. The cybercriminal the waits for the user to pay the ransom before releasing the data. At times the cybercriminal gives the decryption to the user.
