Viruses Flashcards
DNA or RNA
Genetic material used by viruses
Viruses
Tiny, intracellular parasites that infect living cells; not made up of cells and are therefore not living; completely dependent on host cells due to inability to produce DNA or RNA and have a specificity of host cells; possess genome and evolve to exploit capabilities of host cells
Capsid
Protein coat surrounding genetic material in viruses
Envelope (Some Viruses)
Membrane is a phospholipid bilateral; proteins derived from host cells
Bacteriophages
Viruses that only infect bacteria; have a protein tail and tail fibers the superficially resemble legs
Viral Genome Structure
Can be: DNA or RNA; single or double stranded; linear or circular; single or several molecules; 4-1,000 genes
Lytic Cycle
Replicative growth; synthesis of viral proteins and replication of viral genetic material after insertion of viral genetic material into host cell
Lysogenic Cycle
Dormancy; viral genome is incorporated into host cell DNA after entry of viral genetic material into host cell; virus transmitted to daughter cells via cell division
Provirus
Virus that is inserted into a host’s genome
Retrovirus
RNA virus that transcribes RNA to DNA; produces a cDNA strand from RNA, then dsDNA
