viruses Flashcards
viruses
small, non-cellular particles that do not embody most of the characteristics of living things. can only exist as intracellular parasites
virus structure
composed of dna or rna enclosed in capsid
different shapes: cylindrical, cubical, spherical
bacteriophage: special category of virus, unique shape head and tail region. they infect and destroy bacteria cells
host
cell on which another organism lives
host range: the limited # of host species, tissues, or cells a virus can infect
virus replication
- virus disassembles its parts
- makes copies of its genetic info and parts
- assembles copies into many identical viruses
virus replication
lytic cycle
- host cell invaded
- virus repliactes parts and genetic info
- multiple viruses activated and released
- host cell is destroyed
virus replication
lysogenic cycle
- host cell invaded
- viral dna becomes part of host cell’s chromosomes (provirus)
- provirus replicated its parts and genetic info
- provrius remains dormant, not active within the cell but continues replicating
- stimuli trigger the lytic cycle
antibiotics
substances inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, do not destroy viruses
vaccine
liquid preparations of dead or weakened viral/bacterial cells that stimulate the body’s system to fight and produce antibodies
