Virus- Topic 2.2 Flashcards
Explain why viruses may be described as intracellular parasites?
Viruses cannot replicate on their own and their replication is dependent on the host’s cell that they invade.
They don’t metabolise their own energy and therefore obtain enwrgy from the host cell.
Decsribe the structure of the Ebola Virus
Tubular virus with glycoproteins found on the membrane.
State the structure found in all viruses
Nucleic acid core and Capsid
Describe the structure of a bacteriophage
It had a head that contains double stranded DNA in a nucleic acid core, surrounded by a Capsid and a Tail.
HIV is a retrovirus. What does this mean
It is a Virus that contain RNA and uses reverse transcriptase to produce DNA. That is then integrated into the host genome to reproduce new viral proteins.
