virtualisation Flashcards
what is virtualisation?
visualisation is the creation of multiple virtual machines/servers from a physical machine achieved using a bare metal hypervisor
adv- you can run many devices with one device, greater efficiency in power consumption and physical space and resources as everything is setup by a single device, additionally you can re allocate resources such as RAM, space to the guest machines this means re-utilising the most of the existing devices
disvd- as the VM software’s are outsourced by 3rd party firms data may not be secure
server virtualisation
It enables a single physical server to run several applications and each appears to have its own server , now you can run any other types of servers such as a print server, web server, file server etc
client virtualisation
The machines can be standardised e.g everyone has the same applications, look and feel and used across a large variety of different hardware configurations. its compatible with other hardware
adv- easier to backup, deploy, manage can be done centrally via the server
more reliable and long lasting
minimal maintenance and therefore lower costs
disvd- performance and availability if fully dependant on network/internet connection
the central server needs to handle all that extra bandwidth
good high spec servers, more expensive
expertise is needed to install the clients require training
storage visualisation
Used for data management, groups multiple physical storages from multiple sources (storage devices) into a single storage
adv- reduces the amounts of physical storage required
simplifies and reduces the time required for backup, recovery and general storage activities
disvd- can be difficult to solve problems when something goes wrong
cloud virtualisation
Cloud Virtualisation is where businesses pay a Cloud service provider to host and run virtualisation technologies for their business.
adv-quick to set up, pay as you go, its scalable
disvd-: security risks as its outsourced by 3rd party firms so data may not be secure, bandwidth issues (need reliable network)
hybrid virtualisation
combination of PV and hybrid assisted V
adv- produce superior performance on the guest without having the guest to be completely paravirtualized
- improves reliability of VMs
- improved performance and efficiency
- combines adv of PV and hybrid assisted virt.
disvd- upfront costs
-training required to implement and manag
