Viral Vaccines Flashcards
1
Q
Herd immunity
A
immunity at the population level to have enough protection to stop the spread of a virus
2
Q
Vaccines
A
prevent virus infections by activating host immune system
Help increase herd immunity which limits or stops virus transmission - we need 50-80% immunity in the population to stop the spread of a virus
3
Q
Vaccines
Herd immunity
A
- Vaccines give a level of immunity in a population
- number of animals that need ot be protected is different for different viruses
- could be 50-80% depending on the virus
- Enough of the population has to be previously infected or immunized to stop transmission
- we do not need 100% of the population immune to stop the spread of viruses
- Unimmunized people are indirectly protected by herd immunity of hte population
4
Q
Vaccines:
Active
A
long term protection
vaccine contains a modified form of the pathogen or material that is derived from the pathogen
induces immunity without causing disease
5
Q
Vaccines:
Passive
A
short term protection
vaccine contains antibodies or immune cells
6
Q
passive - convalescent serum
A
Tranfer of antibodies form immunized or recovered patients
