- aseptic = non bacterial etiology
- usually self-limited w/in 7-10d
- fecal-oral spread so usually seen seasonally and associated w/ water spread

- HSV-2 = neonates; disseminated infection w/ diffuse encephalitis
- HSV-1 = from viral reactivation in trigeminal ganglia; temporal lobe; older kids and adults
