Canine distemper
Transmission: airborne virus (aerosol), body fluids
Animal affected: young dogs
System: respiratory, GI, skin, mucus membrane
Cause: rna virus related to measeles
Sx: fever, nasal/ocular discharge, cough, CNS delayed affect, death.
Tx: anti canine distemper serum, atbs, cough suppressant, vaccine
Tracheobronchitis (kennel cough)
Caused by; virus
Transmission: contact with nasal or oral secretion
System: respiratory
Sx: dry cough, transient fever, pneumonia,
Tx: vaccination and booster for prevention, atbs
Feline immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
Cause: lentivirus killing T cells. Produces illnesses characterized by a delay in the onset of Sx after infection.
Transmission: bite wounds, contact, litter boxes, food/water dishes.
Sx: oral ulcers, wt. loss, depression, lymph node swelling, fever, cough
Tx: dx FIV in serum - similar to HIV
Feline Leukemia (FeLV)
Cause: oncovirus ( a virus that can cause cancer).
Transmission: virus shed in salivary fluid
Contact, litter box, food water dish
Sx: fever, depression, swelling of lymph nodes
Tx: vaccine.
30% of severe illness in cats causes by this virus.
Canine Parvovirus
Cause: virus that needs rapidly growing cells to replicate. Has protein coat and ssDNA. Parvovirus mutation
Transmission: contact with feces and body tissues
Animal Affected: young pups
System: GI, lymph nodes, thymus, bone arrow
2 types: heart and intestines
Sx: vomiting, abd pain, anorexia, bloody yellow gray diarrhea, dehydration, death
Rabies
Transmission: saliva
System: CNS, respiratory, GI, salivary glands
Sx: change in behavior, hypersensitive, photophobia, paralysis
Tx: vaccinations, boosters
