Violence in Sport Flashcards
Karma:
from Buddhism
Karma is the process of cause and effect. For example, if you do something bad intentionally, then something bad will happen to you. However, if you do something bad unintentionally then something bad will not happen to you.
What did Lance Armstrong do?
- He took a sport enhancing drug on all 7 Tour de Frances Sued people who said he was cheating. At first he denied his actions. He cheated people of their money. He said he would ‘turn on’ anyone if he didn’t like what they were saying.
- He lost trust, titles, money, respect and respect
- He is being open in interviews. He apologised. He said he deserved the consequence he got and he is showing remorse.
Hindu response to violence in Sport:
We must not cause any harm to any living creatures. Although when self defence is necessary it is a sign of strong spirit.
Case Studies
Copa Libertados final put back 24 hours after River Fans attack Boca Bus - as it happened
- The people involved in the violence, could have been fans because they loved and supported their team so much that they wanted to harm the opposing team.
- There would have been legal consequences for the River fans involved in the violence and the victims would have been injured so they both lose.
- If was one of the players in the match I would’ve felt hurt that my fans/ oppositions fans felt obliged to commit these actions.
- I would like to see higher security for the players, and fans to be controlled by officers or other security figures to prevent a situation like this from reoccurring.

What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the holy month during which period the prophet Muhammad says the doors to heavens are wide open and the doors to hell are firmly sealed.
According to the holy book of Muslims, the Quran was first revealed to the prophet Muhammed during Ramadan. Before the daily fast spanning the entire month, Muslims have a pre-dawn meal called suhoor and also come together to break the fast with the meal iftaar. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and is compulsory for all Muslims except those who are exempt - among others are ill, travellers, elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, menstruating etc.
Should Muslims fast for Ramadan when competing in a sport?
I think Muslim athletes can postpone their fast after their sporting event so that they can be 100% fit and still be able to contribute to their faith.
My opinion on horses in sport:
I think that it is okay to use animals in sport for example when horses are used in horse riding but as long as they are treated with extreme care.
Is it acceptable for there to be any risks for animals in sport? Why?
I think that risks should be minimised as much as possible however risks are inevitable in horse riding.
Which of the following is the most important and why? The health and safety of the horses; money and employment that comes from racing; the enjoyment of watching excellent horses race; the possibility of winning lots of money through racing
I think the health and safety of the horse is the most important because there is a possibility of them getting hurt and having to be put down and without the horses there would be no race.
Do you think it is better for injured horses to be commented on during TV broadcasts, or is it better to gloss over it? Give reasons for your answer?
I think it is better for injured horses to be commentated on instead of it being glossed over because otherwise awareness will not be raised on what could happen to horses in races.
Why do you think John Smith’s pulled out of being a sponsor for the grand national?
They might have understood the downsides of the race and known that viewers might not know about the downsides.
Christian beliefs about animals:
- Animals and Christians are created and loved by the same God
- Jesus said ‘Aren’t five sparrows sold for a couple of pennies? But not one of them is forgotten by God!’ Luke 12:6.
- In the garden of Eden and in heaven, animals and humans are said to live in harmony. This is God’s original intention.
