define ‘violence’
Threatened or actual use of force against person/group that results in (or is likely to) injury, death emo. damage, coerced or mal-adaptive behavior.
Situational crisis

What are the types of Situational Crises?
Anticipated - planned, desired predicted (death of a critically ill relative)
Unanticipated - unplanned, unpredicted (unplanned pregnance, unexpected death of a loved one, loss of job, divorce)
What is a maturational crisis?
Developmental. predictable and universal arising from within the individual. a normal part of growth and development.
What is an adventitious crisis?
not part of everyday life, accidental, unplanned
natural disaster, national disaster, crime of violence
Phases of crisis
Phase 1 - 4 anxiety defense mechanism panic/withdrawal no coping (depression, confusion, violence against others or self)
List child abuse interventions.
- Adopt a nonthreatening, nonjudgemental relationship w/parents
- Understand that kids don’t want to betray parents
- Provide a complete physical assessment of child
- Use dolls or other toys to help them tell story
- Be aware of your state and agencies policy in reporting
List Elder abuse interventions.
Check state laws.
Involve Adult Protective Services (APS)
Meet w/family member to identify stressors
If no family support, find community agency to assist
Encourage abusers use of counseling
Suggest family members meet on regular basis to problem solve
Intimate partner interventions.
Ensure medical attention
Set up interview in private
Assess in non-threatening manner sexual use, chemical abuse, thoughts of suicide
Encourage pt to talk about it w/o interruptions
Ask about how patient/kids are faring
Assess if they have a safety plan - provide info if needed
Sexual abuse/assault interventions
Have someone stay with the patient
Approach pt in a Non-judgemental manner**
Confidentiality is crucial**
Explain S/S they may experience in long-term phase (PTSD, nightmares, phobias, anxiety, depression, insomnia, somatic symptoms)
Listen and let them talk
Stress that pt did the right thing to save their life
NO judgemental language (reported, declined, penetration)

What is Rape Trauma Syndrome?
ND which is a variant of PTSD
Consists of 2 phases - Acute, Long-term
When does long-term phase of Rape-Trauma syndrome occur?
What are characteristics?
- May occur as long as 2 weeks after.
- re-experiencing trauma
- Social withdrawal
- avoidance behaviors/actions
- Increased psychological arousal
- Fears and phobias
