Viewing Radiographs (Quiz 1) Flashcards
If film has a backwards R on the top left corner, then which direction was it taken in?
A-> P
If film has an R on the top right corner, then how will the film be viewed?
P-> A
Why do chiropractors read scans from P-> A most of the time?
bc we’re not looking for pathology (which is visible A->P)
If theres no markings on a scan to indicate direction, how do you know the side of the patient?
-fillings
-heart shadow
-the apex of heart is always L
-the R kidney is higher than the L
What does the position of the ball indicate?
If the ball is low then it means pt is laying down, high up the pt is weight bearing/standing
Why do chiropractors want scans to be done standing as opposed to having the pt lay down?
bc when you’re laying down all vertebrae are posterior and this is incorrect for seeing misalignments, anomalies, etc and can cause you to overadjust
What info is required to be imprinted on a scan?
-name/address of radiologist or institution
-date of x-ray
-patient name
-patient case number
-optional= include pt age
What are the angle of projections for scans?
-A->P
-base posterior
-lateral
-nasium
-oblique
What are the different contrasts of scans called?
quiz q
short scale (less shades of grey/more density) and long scale (more shades of grey/ less density (can see more soft tissue))
How should you be surveying periosteum (soft tissue covering of bone) on a scan?
quiz q
no visible shadow= normal periosteum
visible shadow= pathology
What should the cortex of bones look like on x-rays?
quiz q
bright, white, unbroken, and smooth line
What are the 5 densities of x-ray?
4 natural densities:
1) bone
2) soft tissue
3) fat
4) air
unnatural density= metal
Do we prefer long scale or short scale contrast on xrays?
short scale (more density)
What is the medullary region?
-soft spongy center
-more bright white than soft tissues but not as bright white as cortex
Do adults or children have open epiphyseal growth plates?
children, if adults do then theres a problem (usually endocrine issue, but they probably know about it already)
