The US believed that if communism wasn’t put to a stop in Vietnam then other countries in South-East Asia would fall into communist control by ‘falling like dominoes’. So the US wanted to contain communism.
What happened at the Geneva Convention in 1954?
An agreement was designed to unite Vietnam and it was agreed that elections should be held every 2 years. Eisenhower was worried that communists might win and come into power, so he helped Ngo Dinh Diem to set up anti-communist Republic of South Vietnam. The Geneva Convention divided Vietnam into 2 countries along the 17th parallel.
