Unpopularity of Ngo Dinh Diem

A

Christian and wanted to spread: most people in SVt were Buddhists -> govt attacked Buddhist shrines
Belonged to Landlord class: treated peasants (most SVt) very badly
Overthrown by his own army in 1963, replaced by equally corrupt leaders

A

Encourages Congress to pass ‘Gulf Of Tonkin’ resolution to give Johnson FULL POWER
followed by US intervention

REASONS for Intervention by USA

A

‘Domino Theory’: determined to stop spread of comm, military had HUGE budget
Kennedy -> Johnson: change in foreign policy, much more aggressive
‘Military-Industrial Complex’: US businesses that made weapons gained HUGE revenue
Lots of Pro-War interests in USA, defence secretary McNamara encouraged war

STRENGTH VC: Guerilla Tactics

A
  • ‘hit-&-run’ raids, small groups, no headquarters, no uniform, hard to distinguish
  • knew territory: made war unconventional for USA, ambushed
  • stayed close to US quarters: they did not risk bombing themselves
  • WRECKED MORALE: caused 51% of US casualties

Consistency of VC demotivated

AMERICAN FAILURE: Tet Offensive, 1968

A

Huge attack on SV bases by Viet Cong with +100 targets
Ended in failure but showed determination of VC: after 4 years of war against USA still could fight back
Showed US tactics were not working

A

500 villagers murdered at gunpoint, no VC found
Lt. Calley responsible but never charged

US public turned against war: Nov 1969, 700,000 anti-war protesters in W D.C: largest in US history
1960s time of cultural change! Civil rights, women…
Social tension: most fighters were AAs: 30% drafted vs 19% of white americans
(Even lower morale: why fight for a country that hates you?)
